What Is a Barcode?
A Barcode is “an optical machine-readable representation of data, which shows certain data on certain products”. It can be one dimensional and two dimensional, and are represented through geographical patterns and matrix codes. The schemes and letter combination used in generating a code constitutes a barcode font.
What Are Barcode Readers?
Scanner that read the information on barcodes are barcode readers. It is an electronic device that through the help of light sensors reads the data stored on barcodes. Almost all products are bar-coded these days. There are even talks of introducing the technology on mobile phones, wherein a mobile phone has to decode the code before downloading any applications like songs and videos.

Application Of Barcode
- In the last decade, many artists have resorted to barcode their works of art to prevent theft and fraud.
- Shopkeepers, grocery stores, shopping malls, and others where large number of goods are stored use barcode readers to identify and price tag the product.
- In several areas, barcodes are printed on tickets for recreation purposes. One needs to verify the tickets before entering particular premises such as theatres and fairgrounds.
- Airlines use IATA standard 2D barcode for boarding passes. They are also sent to mobile phones for verification during airline entry.
- In hospitals, barcodes are used to identify patients. Not all patients are given the codes, only the high risk ones.
- Barcodes are printed on membership cards or shopping vouchers to identify the customer. They are used to earmark special promotional offers, discount sales, and marketing offers for particular customers.
